Johnny Chair

I made this artwork and started printing shirts with it a few years ago. Then my college bought several hundred shirts for homecoming. Now it’s finding its way onto postcards and more for the college. It’s now featured on the alumni Facebook page. (modest boast?)

The Johnny chair has a special place in my heart. My alma mater, St. John’s (where students are called ‘Johnnies’) used this chair and the armless version for every classroom and every dorm. Students knew just how to prop themselves up with one knee on the seminar table, this chair tilted back, until they nearly (or did in fact) fall flat on their backs.

The chairs have become a symbol of the college, and it turns out Johnny Chair has not just one, but two Facebook pages, each with way more friends than I have. The gangs can fight each other over the proper spelling.

Okay we all have our fetishes.
